Robbie is one of those guys that you can't help but be drawn to. Always ready with a quick witted remark, or a practicl joke, he is able to keep you smiling no matter what. I have had countless lunches, where I am sure I still owe him quite a few, and several heated political debates, that always left us friends! I will miss seeing his flamboyant socks and casual Friday shirts! Robbie loves Peoples Telephone and the community that he served. And they loved him in return. I am going to miss him. Others will begin this same series next month, and still others the following. A special note to all involved in trenching and excavation work, please don't allow yourself to get into an excavation, whether it is a traditional trench, bell hole, or shallow opening, watch for the warning signs of wall collapse! Be ever mindful of fissures, cracks, loose pebbles trickling down wall face, seeping water of drastic changes in temperature! If that voice in the back of your head even starts to whisper to you that things don't look o feel right, get out of the hole! Ask yourself, are these walls sloped to the proper ratio? Have we classified this soil correctly? Should I be in a trench box? For that I apologize. This will be a busy year for our Utilicom Safety family! Our West Texas training circuit is scheduled for 2012. Defensive Driving classes will be held, hopefully for all Texas based companies and coop's, as well as several OSHA Outreach courses. GVTC OSHA, NTCA in Seattle, Plantmans Conference in San Antonio, OSHA Training at Blue Valley and possible returns to Alaska and Utah should keep me busy for the next couple of months! This is a critical time for safety in working America right now! Most businesses are doing more with fewer employees. This trend will continue as our economy is forcing us to do more with less. Due to the hard working American spirit we all have (thank goodness!), we are succeeding! This of course means leaner staff, and work loads that can some times double. I'm not saying we can't handle this, as we obviously are handling it just fine, however, complacency can be a killer! Identifying and rectifying hazards must be in the forefront and it will be in Rappsession Safety Topics that a lot of your receive every month. I am going to try and focus traing, all or in part, to hazards recognition and avoidance. I will use pictures, scenarios, and quizzes more abundantly. In Texas we are hitting records all over the state. There are wild fires out in AZ and NM, while flood waters just to our north! People are hurting all over! Our biggest concern in Texas is the insane heat! Please remember to drink your fluids (preferably water, sports drinks and fresh fruit and vegetables). Yes we get alot of fluid from our food! Stay rested, that means try not to stay up too late, take plenty of breaks throughout your work day when your out in the heat, and get some shade! That can come from a hat, your truck, a tree, a building, and don't forget you sunscreen! (more on that later). Keep me in your thoughts as I trek up north to Alaska next week, then on to D.C. For the 4th of July parade. I hope you have a great simmer, I mean summer. I guess simmer actually works better with this heat! Some ideas to how much fluids you should intake; 1st you can go by the old stand by of 8 oz 8 times a day. The problem is that most people can easily use 2.5 liters on a daily basis. 2 liters is around 2.7 liters so you are already behind if your only drinking 8x8. Try dividing your weight in half and drinking that amount in oz. I weigh approx 232 lbs. 232/2=116. So I should intake approx 116 oz every day while working outside in the hot, humid east Texas heat. You can also try 5-7oz every 15-20 minutes while working in the heat. This is difficult but well worth it if you are trying to stay hydrated. You should also remember that water alone does not replace lost salt or minerals so sports drinks and electrolyte laden fluids are essential. Long sleeved shirts, sun block, wide brimmed hats and frequent visits to shade where you can rest will keep you fit and safe when working in the heat. I taught an OSHA class at GVTC outside of San Antonio, I taught an OSHA class in Savannah last week and this week I am in West Texas on my monthly circuit training trip! I can't wait to get home. I owe my wife some couple time as it was our anniversary on the 23rd and I was out of town. <br />Summer is here and there will be young teens learning to drive, others with a tad more experience on the roads with friends trying to enjoy their summer, please watch for them on the roads. Usually there will be more motorcycles out enjoying the weather and saving fuel, so watch for them too! <br />Please drink plenty of fluids and stay in the shade. Take breaks and get plenty if rest during the day! The news came late last night. Can you imagine being on the team that went in and not only killed him but recovered his body! How differently do you think that corpse was treated by our soldiers then if the roles were reversed? Just something to think about. What does this have to do with safety? Other then as Americans all being a little bit safer from terrorism today then yesterday, nothing! It is my blog and I am happy he is dead! I am thoroughly enjoying the capabilities of this app to track everything I eat in calories and even deduct the amount I burn in exercise for a daily net calorie count. It will tell you your nutrient intact for the day and help you manage you everything you need to loose weight and/or stay healthy. The app is also a social app in that it allows you to have friends who can see your progress and vice versa! Great eyes catching this one. Where the employer is ultimately responsible for this violation, this is a great example of incorrect behavior on the part of the employee not only putting him/herself in danger but also putting the company at risk for a costly injury and/or an OSHA fine. Never use the top platform as a step, never use a step ladder as an extension or single ladder. Check the capacity rating also. The 4:1 ratio must also be used. Ironically, that may be the only thing this employee has right. This Smart Car is half the size of my Crown Vic. I saw a show that demonstrated the good crash test results of this car, however, it would seem scarey to drive this down the highway at 70. I think the coverted golf cart we use to carry feed and hay on is actually longer then this car. You be the judge. Is the fuel savings enough of an offset for you? I am not convinced yet. Maybe if gas goes up to $7 per gallon I&#39;ll change my tune. We are leaving on June 5th and will be gone for a tad over two weeks. We have been training and preparing and frankly we can't wait. The work consists of reading English Study guides with people wanting to learn English. The study guides are basically chapters from the book or Luke. We are not there to teach them doctrine or our personal beliefs, rather we are there to help them with English. We are to let the Bible do the teaching. Some of these people we will read with have truly never heard the story of Jesus. That is something that we take for granted here in the U.S. This is a great opportunity for my son and I, and if you regularly pray, we would like to ask for you to include us in those prayers. I have been on the planet for 40 years now and I now have teenagers. Man life changes quickly. So does government. We have a new OSHA Assistant Secretary of Labor named David Michaels. He has a long resume, an epidemiologist, a history in research and regulatory policy, and program administration, he was, I believe, an interim Chair in the Evironmental and Occupational Health Department at George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. He worked for President Clinton as the Department of Energy's Assistant Secretary for Environment, Safety and Health.<br />According to an email I recieved from BLR Safety Daily Advisor, Mr. Michaels stated in an article written in New York Committee of Occupational Safety and Health's newletter, that OSHA should focus on 1) a workplace injury and illness prevention program rule, 2) an increase in workplace health and safety capacity (I am not sure what the refers to, honestly), 3) the development of a new electronic recordkeeping and reporting system (that's a little scarey to me), and 4) a campaign to change the way the nation thinks about workplace safety.<br />He also said the Obama Administration's objective should not be better/smarter enforcement, but should create a bold campaign to change the workplace culture of safety. Which refers to the last point of the four parts mentioned. OSHA has been hinting for a while that the new focus is going to be enforcement and not compliance. We shall see. Everyone should be ready for a visit. It's almost time to put out your Summary logs. If you need help just let me know. Sorry for that. Of course there are probably not a lot of folks waiting to hear about safety stuff on my little ol' blog, but apologies non-the-less.<br />There has been alot of talk about OSHA coming and how we all have to be prepared. It is true. Each of you need to get it on your mind, that you will most likely be visited some time soon. Bone up, get your PPE on, (enforce that with your employees), make sure your recordkeeping is up, make sure your signage is up, complete your inspections, look for and correct hazards, and get your employees involved. <br />Don't let safety fall by the way side. In this economy, safety should not be left behind, but rather stepped up. Now is the time for each of you to really have the best possible employees out there. 1 in 6 Americans are nbot working. That means the pool of employees is vast to choose from. Use safety as a way of acquiring the best employees. If an employee does not want to abide by safety policy and rules that the government and your company has set forth, there are literally millions of people out there that will. A costly accident because someone neglected to follow basic safety procedures not only will result in medical costs, but higher insurance premiums, and a possible fine from OSHA. You can debate or disagree all you like, but the fact is they are coming to a location near you. Everyone needs to review your safety processes, re-evaluate your hazard communication programs, ensure your employees are adequately trained in the safety issues that effect them, and get your supervisors on board with safety. Check your record keeping paperwork, and follow-up on your accident investigations. Now is a good time to review your safety manuals and incentive plans. Remember, anything that might keep an employee from reporting a near miss or accident, is not a good incentive plan, and will spark a closer look from OSHA when they visit. We still need to identify and eliminate hazards, we still need to educate our employees about unsafe practices and situations, and as a matter of fact, maybe now it is even more important due to the costs associated with accidents. For the sake of your employees, don't let up now. Let's refocus our efforts, and put safety first. If safety really hasn't been on the forefront of you company culture, why not put it there now. With the average accident potentially costing upwards of $18 - 20,000, it behooves us all to restrict unsafe behaviors and unsafe situations. A small effort now can pay off with huge dividends later. Although I have been working out and have cut out soda (diet and regular), and have dropped 28 lbs., I seem to have acquired Diabetes. So even more drastic changes will have to be made to my lifestyle. I though it might be interesting to post my progress, some of you may not care, but I think it may be therapeutic for me. So I will post a list of my blood sugar and times. My goal is to get under 130 in the mornings. Today I was 187. That is better, however, then the 314 I had when I found out I had Diabetes. So I may discuss diet, good grilling recipes and preventative measures also in the new Health Section of this blog. I just want to stress to anyone that even reads this blog who cares about their health, we all need to do better in our eating habits and how we maintain our fitness. Summer Time. If you are part of the Utilicom Safety Family then you live in a hot climate. Fluids, fluids, fluids. Drink water or sports drinks as often as you can. But don't rely only on the sports drinks. Water is really that best thing for you. Your urine should be clear with a slight yellow hue to it at the end of the day. I say it every year, because it is true. It your urine is dark (a little smelly too) then your getting dehydrated. Drink more fluids. Watch your high calorie and fatty foods in the summer also (well really all the time). If you partake of alcohol, make sure you drink the equal amount of water the next day on top of what you should already be drinking. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are not laughing matters, they are serious medical conditions. Don't forget your sun block and hat either. Long sleeved shirts and bug repellent should also be worn. And if you have any money left over after all that, buy some gas and try to get to work. Side Note-Get ready for some opinion: If you haven't gone to see the movie by Ben Stein called EXPELLED, No Intelligence Allowed, then you really owe it to yourself to go. If you are a lover of free speech, if you agree with the scientific approach to questioning the known and the accepted, if you agree with freedom and the unhindered exchange of ideas (especially in our colleges and universities), then you must see this movie. It is upsetting, scary, enlightening, and a necessary that you see this film. Outreach Training put on by NTCA in June, go to their website and check it out (I'll be doing the training). If you can't make it to Dallas in June, then don't worry, because Telcom Ins. This week alone, I have had installers kill a few Black Widows, one Brown Recluse, and had a Brown Recluse bite an office worker. Several snakes have been reported and a few have been killed. The bees and wasps are abundant as well as every other creepy crawly thing out there. It is time to be vigilant. Watch where you put your hands, leave your cologne at home, and don't put yourself in a position that might jeopardize your safety. Long sleeved pants and shirts are a must in the summer. Remember that if you are bitten or or stung while at work, it is considered a workplace injury and depending on the severity it may turn into a recordable injury. You need to report it immediately so your supervisor can take care of you. Today a 21 year old attempted to take his life in a very gruesome way. As of this posting he is still with us being tended to by a very capable ED staff. This young man's life, if he decides to fight for it, will never be normal again. The surgeries, the pain, the odd looks he will receive, are just too terrible to think about. I am reminded of how much our actions affect those around us. We really never know the effect we may have on somebody years down the road.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;">So here is where I implore you. Be mindful of your words, your actions, and even your </span><span style="font-family:arial;">thoughts. Only do things that builds up the person next to you. Hold you tongue, and put your needs aside. What if we did these things for a short while, say a week. Could it make a difference? I am willing to try. We may think we already do these things, and maybe you do. However, I tend to think that we have become a rather </span><span style="font-family:arial;"><span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">narcissistic nation. These are just a few thoughts to dwell on. If you have the time, say a prayer for this family. They have a long row to hoe, and they'll need your prayers. My original idea for having a blog was to reach all those clients that I train monthly regarding safety issues and reinforce that training through the blog.
